Cook Out Information

Pulling into the lot at 8970 University Blvd in North Charleston, the bright red signage of Cook Out immediately sets the tone for what you’re about to get-fast, affordable Southern comfort food with a loyal following. This spot feels like a classic drive-in diner, the kind of place where the menu is big, the prices are low, and the portions are anything but shy.

The menu is where things really shine. Cook Out is known for its trays, a combo-style deal where you can mix and match a main item like a burger, chicken sandwich, or barbecue with two sides and a drink. It’s almost overwhelming at first glance, but in a good way. On my visit, the char-grilled burger stood out, cooked with that slightly smoky flavor you only get from an open flame. The hushpuppies were crispy on the outside and soft inside, while the Cajun fries had just enough kick to keep things interesting without overpowering the rest of the meal.

Milkshakes deserve their own moment here. With dozens of flavors listed on the menu, from classic chocolate and vanilla to more adventurous options like banana pudding or peanut butter fudge, it’s easy to see why people rave about them in reviews. The shake I tried was thick enough to require some patience but worth every sip, rich without being overly sweet.

The atmosphere leans heavily toward casual and functional rather than cozy. Most people either go through the drive-thru or grab their food to go, though there is limited outdoor seating. Service tends to be quick, even during busy hours, and the staff keeps things moving efficiently. It’s not the place you come for a long, relaxed dinner, but it nails what it’s designed to do-serve good food fast.

Given its location in North Charleston, Cook Out fits right into the local dining scene, offering a budget-friendly alternative to pricier sit-down spots nearby. It’s especially popular with students and families looking for a satisfying meal without spending much. While it may not have the polish of a full-service restaurant, it delivers consistency, variety, and value, which explains why it continues to draw steady crowds.

What People's Say About Place

I almost always have a positive experience with the food at cookout. Occasionally, I might be slightly disappointed in the amount of fries or the amount of cheese bites, but I’m sure there’s a method to how they add portions and I’m always satisfied. The only reason for dinging them would be that I often feel the pressure of being rushed. It’s always very challenging for me to hear at their drive-up speaker. I would say nearly most every time, the person on the other side of the speaker speaks very quickly, and I think they’re usually trying to do too many things at one time like hand food out the window while taking your order at the same time because they often ask you to repeat yourself. So that’s a little frustrating but even with that I still give Cook out positive reviews for my experience. I wish they would see this message and maybe train their folks a little better to slow down, speak clearly, and don’t make your customer feel pressured or rushed. We all know that fast food is fast food for a reason but clear communication is super important.

Their food is so damn good, easily put. Some of the best hush puppies I've ever had AND it's relatively affordable in this economy!! Staff could be a little friendlier but I mean I've worked in customer service and it's simply not easy every single day to be in a pleasant mood so I get it. Definitely recommend - I don't even eat fast food anymore but I make an exception here.

Been through the drive thru 2x, and other than that 3x my roomate has brought me a tray. First of all I go in person now cuz I usually get someone who is genuinely nice and funny! Always helpful! The guy with long hair and tattoos who suggested cherrywine to me tonight (10/4) you're a real one! Food is always good! Always have something left over! And for the price, can't be beat! Bonus points- got a side of onion rings tonight and there was a Bible verse on the bag

Hear me out; I don’t do reviews and my username is absolutely atrocious, but this review is serious. I went through the drive through with my mother, and the line was all backed up but they dealt with it super quickly. They got our order done in like three minutes and it was amazing. The lady at the drive thru was also super polite and quick with her questions, definitely would’ve tipped if we had the finances! Huge thanks to Kanashia; she was the wonderful and sweet lady that took our order!

This is literally one of the best corn dogs I’ve ever had. Also this orange creamsicle milkshake is so good; it’s super thick (almost too thick, it’s really hard to drink from a straw). It was very crowded with a bunch of other teens (probably after a football game or something) when I went but they still got my food and shake out pretty quick in the drive thru line and it was delicious!!

Cheapest fast food around. It tastes amazing and is actually fast. The speakers are kinda bad and sometimes my burger is slightly wrong, but its always delicious so I dont really care

Extra long wait for hot dogs and burgers... over 10 minutes sitting in drive thru. To many, "please repeat that" to the drive thru every time. It's very frustrating when there's a language issue in "fast" food. Also, you have to ask AGIAN at the window for napkins and any sauces. Every time.

Back when I was training at NNPTC and attending prototype I used to come here all the time and get the cookout dog with the sweet carolina slaw and onions, hush puppies, and a chili cheese burger; especially since they're one of the only places still open when you're getting off the night shift. This place is pretty much the only thing I still miss about living here
